Information for Health Professionals
The Gosport Shed is a volunteer run charity that provides a place for the older men of Gosport, Lee on the Solent, and the surrounding areas to come and relax, fill their spare time, make new friends, and find new interests.
Many older men, maybe after retirement, redundancy or bereavement find the change in routine and focus hard to adjust to and can lead to loneliness and boredom. The Gosport Shed, located in the grounds of St. Vincent College can provide a warm welcome and has numerous facilities and undertakes a range of activities, visits and trips enabling its members to enjoy new friendships and hobbies with like-minded men. An annual membership fee is payable by all members.
This can aid the wellbeing of the members, both mentally and physically. The Gosport Shed has been designed to be accessible to disabled individuals where possible. Certain facilities, such as the machine shop, maybe unsuitable for some individuals.
However, the Gosport Shed does not operate as a day service and cannot provide carer or medical facilities. Each member is expected to be self-sufficient in their mobility and medical needs. Shed members cannot provide medication services, or any form of personal care, or any other medical support to any individual.
The Gosport Shed is frequently contacted by healthcare professionals looking for support for their patients / clients. It is understood that such health professionals are wishing to do the best for their patients / clients, but they must be mindful of the limitations that the Gosport Shed has as a volunteer led, self-help organisation.
If the health professional feels that an individual patient / client can meet the membership self-sufficiency criteria, and the individual would benefit from attending the Gosport Shed, that individual would be welcome to come and visit us to assess the suitability of the Gosport Shed for them. Please contact us to arrange a visit.
The Gosport Shed is open Monday to Friday (except bank holidays) from 9am to approximately 2pm.
To contact us please email [email protected] or phone 07852 452664 during open hours. Further information on the Gosport Shed can be found on our website thegosportshed.org.
